Friday December 2, 2022 with jet lag

Upsets abound.  Japan and Morocco are advancing and Germany and Belgium are not.  Been a crazy tournament.  For us it’s been crazy too.  One and possibly two of our team are Covid positive and that really makes things a bit confusing.  This virus has a way of really interfering with great plans.  Kathy and the home team have been great making us as comfortable as possible.  The weather is wonderful and we all are spending a lot of time outdoors.   Tonight we (those testing negative) are going to another 10pm match, which means not getting home until 2:30 am.  Late nights coupled with jet lag make sleeping a challenge.  Doha has changed a lot in the 13 years we have been visiting.  New expressways, dozens of new buildings and restaurants from every corner of the world.  Construction has slowed, and we all wonder what it will look like in10 years —will it all get used, maintained, or just go back to the desert?  Tonight’s match is in the 974 stadium which is constructed in large part from shipping containers and is supposedly to be taken apart and shipped to another country after the tournament ends.

A couple of updates.  Went to the 974 stadium—named after the country dialing code for Qatar. Saw Switzerland beat Serbia and secure a spot in the knockout round.  Very intense match.

Funny story about living in Qatar went golfing on Wednesday with Jeff Henderson, outrage traveling companion at a par 3 none hole course that is part of the Education City golf club.  There is also an 18 hole and six hole course all built together as well as a foot golf course that winds through the area.  Wonderful little course with sand traps that resemble Bomb craters.  But the thing that was funny was in the club house.  They had shirts and clubs and all the usual golf gear, but where else do you see a sales booth for Rolex watches when you are picking out your golf balls?
